A/R & Collections calculator
Gross Collection Rate Calculator
The gross collection rate is the simplest collection measure there is: payments divided by gross charges. It is quick to calculate and fine for watching your own trend, but it mixes your fee schedule into the result, so.
What this calculator shows
The gross collection rate is the simplest collection measure there is: payments divided by gross charges. It is quick to calculate and fine for watching your own trend, but it mixes your fee schedule into the result, so it cannot be compared between practices or used to judge billing on its own.
That is because contractual adjustments, the difference between your charges and what contracts allow, stay in the denominator. The net collection rate removes them; this one does not.

Gross Collection Rate Calculator
Payments over gross charges: the simple, rough collection measure.
How the calculation works
Gross collection rate = payments / gross charges x 100. It does not subtract contractual adjustments, so a practice charging twice the allowed amount will show roughly half the rate of an identical practice charging at the allowed amount.
How to read your result
Use this rate for one thing: your own trend, with an unchanged fee schedule. For judging billing performance, switch to the net collection rate, and read both in context in our medical billing KPIs guide. If the gross rate drops suddenly while the net rate holds, your fee schedule or payer mix changed, not your billing.

Before you rely on the number
Results are estimates for educational and operational planning, built from the figures you enter. They are not guarantees of reimbursement, savings or recovery, and they do not replace a review of your own claims, contracts and remittances. Do not enter patient-identifiable or protected health information: this calculator runs in your browser and nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
FAQ
Calculator questions
Still have a question? Talk to our team about your billing workflow.
Why is my gross collection rate so much lower than my net rate?
Because gross charges include amounts your contracts never allowed. The wider your chargemaster is above contracted rates, the lower this percentage sits, with identical collections.
Can I compare my gross rate with another practice's?
Not meaningfully. Different fee schedules and payer mixes move it more than billing quality does.
Which rate do payers look at?
Neither directly. Payers look at claim accuracy and contract compliance. These rates are practice management tools.
