A/R & Collections calculator

Patient Collection Rate Calculator

As deductibles and coinsurance grow, the patient share of revenue keeps getting bigger, and it is the share most likely to be billed once and forgotten. The patient collection rate measures what came in against what.

What this calculator shows

As deductibles and coinsurance grow, the patient share of revenue keeps getting bigger, and it is the share most likely to be billed once and forgotten. The patient collection rate measures what came in against what patients were billed, and the outstanding figure is the balance still waiting on statements, reminders and workable payment options.

Use patient responsibility billed and patient payments collected for the same period. Responsibility means the amount patients owed after insurance processed, not your gross charges.

Patient Collection Rate Calculator

Of the patient balances you billed, how much actually came in?

What patients owed for the period.
Same period.
Patient collection rate—
Outstanding patient balance—
Collected from patients—

Patient collection rate = patient payments collected / patient responsibility billed x 100. Outstanding = billed minus collected.

Estimates only, from your figures. Nothing you enter is stored or sent anywhere; do not enter patient-identifiable information.

How the calculation works

Patient collection rate = patient payments collected / patient responsibility billed x 100. Outstanding = billed minus collected.

How to read your result

The levers here are mostly kindness plus process: accurate estimates before the visit, statements that arrive while the visit is remembered, a payment link that works on a phone, and a payment plan option before a balance becomes a write-off. That workflow is our patient billing and collections service, and the front end of it is checked in eligibility verification.

Before you rely on the number

Results are estimates for educational and operational planning, built from the figures you enter. They are not guarantees of reimbursement, savings or recovery, and they do not replace a review of your own claims, contracts and remittances. Do not enter patient-identifiable or protected health information: this calculator runs in your browser and nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.

FAQ

Calculator questions

Still have a question? Talk to our team about your billing workflow.

Does billed mean after insurance paid its part?

Yes. Patient responsibility is what remains for the patient after adjudication: copay, deductible and coinsurance amounts. Billing patients before insurance processes creates confusion and refunds.

Should payment plans count as collected?

Count money received, not promised. Track plan balances inside the outstanding figure until they are paid.

What about very old patient balances?

They collect poorly and cost goodwill when chased aggressively. A clear policy, set before treatment where possible, beats repeated statements after the fact.
